Peruvanam Pooram

Meeting of gods such as these are a part of the life of people in Kerala especially the middle part of the state where almost all medium and big sized temples participate in at least one such festival every year. The pictures are of the famous Peruvanam Pooram which is held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham every year. The major temples participating are Arattupuzha Shastha, Chathakkudam Shastha, Urakam Ammathiruvadi and Cherpil Bhagavathi and it is hosted by Peruvanthappan (Irattayappan).

This is where the famous Panchari melam was orchestrated for the first time and this is where the tuskers got their ornamental Thalekkettu in its present form for the first time.

This festival has a history which dates back to AD 583 and during those days 108 deities used to participate from as many temples but it has been reduced to just 23 in the present day due to various reasons.
